What the expect in an EMDR intensive
1. Intake
During the intake session, you’ll talk 1:1 with a licensed clinician about your story, goals, and questions. Your clinician will take the time to deeply understand your story and create a treatment plan just for you.
2. EMDR session
Depending on your preference and needs, you’ll be scheduled for a half or full-day session. This time involves multiple steps and is dedicated to creating resources that help you confidently shift your core beliefs. The phases we’ll walk through include:
- Preparation: Helps you understand EMDR and creates a foundation of trust, ensuring you feel supported and safe.
- Assessment: Identifies specific memories or targets for treatment and measures their impact.
- Desensitization: Gently guides you through processing distressing memories using soothing techniques like tapping or eye movements.
- Installation: Strengthens positive beliefs related to the targeted memories.
- Body scan: Checks for remaining physical tension or discomfort linked to the memories.
- Closure: Helps you return to a calm state and process any new emotions that arise.
During our session, you'll receive a notebook filled with everything we cover – skills, belief systems, and insights on processing. It's a handy reference for you and a valuable resource to share with your therapist.
3. Follow-up
After the intensive, we’ll check in on your progress, review what happened during the intensive, and consider returning to regular weekly sessions for ongoing processing and support.

FAQS
How does an EMDR intensive work?
An EMDR intensive is a concentrated therapy session over a half or a full day. The session is designed to accelerate healing by dedicating extended time to the EMDR process. During the session, you engage in concentrated EMDR therapy to process and resolve your specific beliefs.
What can EMDR intensives be used to address?
If you want to change your mindset quickly, an EMDR intensive could be right for you. For example, if you’re going through a major life change like a new job, moving to a new city, or becoming a parent, it could match your needs. Additionally, if you’re stuck on a negative belief that’s holding you back, an EMDR intensive might be a good fit.
Does insurance cover EMDR intensives?
Depending on your insurance provider, the intake session may be covered. However, the EMDR intensive session will be self-pay.
Are EMDR intensives stressful or difficult?
While EMDR sessions can be intense, they are also deeply healing. Our compassionate clinicians will be there every step of the way supporting you with coping strategies. Many participants enjoy the accelerated path to healing and find the intensive process manageable.
How long does an EMDR intensive take?
We offer EMDR intensives as half-day or full-day sessions.
Can I do multiple EMDR intensives?
Yes, you can participate in multiple EMDR intensives to address your individual needs and goals.
Can an EMDR intensive be done online?
Yes! We can facilitate sessions virtually for residents of Ohio, Nevada, and Florida. Online EMDR intensives are just as effective as in-person. We also offer EMDR intensives in our Westlake office on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio.
How do I know if an EMDR intensive is right for me?
We’ll partner with you to determine if an EMDR session is right for you. We understand that an EMDR intensive is both a financial and time commitment – so we do our diligence to make sure it’ll serve you.
Are EMDR intensives worth it?
Simply put – yes. Sessions occur over a day, so rather than going to counseling weekly, you’d set aside a day for intensive therapeutic work. Intensives are scheduled to fit your life, making it a good option if you have a busy schedule or want to see results quickly. Depending on your unique circumstances, it could lessen your overall time spent in therapy.
How is care coordinated with my outside therapist for EMDR intensives?
We work directly with your outside therapist to make sure your EMDR intensive supports your overall treatment. A signed release form is required so we can share information and coordinate your care smoothly.
